Understanding College GPA

Learn how GPA is calculated and why it matters

What is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It's a numerical representation of your overall academic performance, calculated by averaging the grades you've received in your courses.

Key Insight

Your GPA is one of the most important metrics in your academic career, used for scholarships, graduate school admissions, and employment opportunities.

How GPA is Calculated

To calculate GPA:

GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credit Hours

Example Calculation

If you took these courses:

  • Calculus (4 credits) - Grade: A- (3.7)
  • English (3 credits) - Grade: B+ (3.3)
  • Biology (4 credits) - Grade: B (3.0)
  • History (3 credits) - Grade: A (4.0)

Total Grade Points = (4 × 3.7) + (3 × 3.3) + (4 × 3.0) + (3 × 4.0) = 48.7
Total Credits = 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14
GPA = 48.7 ÷ 14 = 3.48
